Diet drinks
If you can put up with the taste of sweeteners and are
prepared to risk the potential long term side effects (just do
a Google search for "aspartame"), you can get all sorts of
interesting sugar-free diet sodas these days. If you would
prefer to avoid these commercial "diet" drinks and instead
consume small quantities of normal drinks, or make your own,
you will find some suggestions below.
Squashes and
cordials
Designer cordials are very "in" and are a great boon for the
dieter as you can vary your evening tipple while controlling
your calorie intake. A fairly weak cordial mixed with soda or
flat water can taste delicious and be surprisingly low in
calories - but make sure you monitor how much you are using and
don't go overboard. Try elderflower, lemongrass and ginger,
wild berry, blueberry, wild cherry - there are some really
exciting flavors available these days.
Lemon and Lime
Drinks
Make your own low calorie fresh lemon and lime drinks by
squeezing the juice of one lemon or lime, stirring in some
sugar substitute (I prefer Perfect Sweet, which is low GI), and
topping up with water (fizzy or still) and ice. The lime
version is turned into a very refreshing "Indian Lime Soda"
with the addition of a small pinch of salt and even a grinding
of black pepper - delicious!
Ice
Tea
My favourite ice tea is made quickly and easily by steeping
two tea bags - I use one oolong tea bag and one everyday or
breakfast tea bag - in a small amount of boiling water for a
few minutes. While still hot, stir in a tablespoon of sugar
substitute (I use Perfect Sweet). Squeeze in the juice of a
lemon and watch the colour of the tea lighten! Pour into a jug
and top up with cold water and ice. This will make enough for 2
or 3 long glasses.
